California is moving the first of a reported 5,000 state prisoners to other states because its prisons are bulging at the seams. There are over 173,000 prisoners in facilities designed for fewer than 100,000. Two decades ago, California sentenced these non-violent offenders to county jails, alternative sentencing or other local solutions, not state prisons. Now they're sending everyone to state prison. (The state prison guards union is behind many of the most successful proposals to lock people up for more time.) Those who said they should release violence offenders missed the point. I am trying to figure out our prorated rent because I think it should be based on the rent divided by how many days there are in a month and my landlord says it should be just 30 days. Anyone out there have any info with regards to prorated rent formulas or laws or guidelines in California? Thanks!

What is the California law on termintating a month to month lease? I am renting out my condo in Southern California on a month to month basis. The place will be sold soon, and I have verbally notified the tenant of this in the beginning of this month, but I'd like to put it in writing, do I need to give him 30 or 60 days? And does it commence at the sining date or verbal notification?

Can a notary in California write a letter for a client then notarize the signatures on that letter? A client needs a letter stating that she rents a room in a house in order to qualify her child to go to a certain school district. She wants me to write the letter for her and for me to notarize the signatures of her and the property owner. Yay or nay???? Would prefer advice from professional.

Do I need to file taxes in California if I was a student out of state, and changed residency in August? I went to college in Maryland for 4 years, but remained a California resident. While living in Maryland I earned nontaxed (scholarship) and taxed (but claimed exempt from state) income. I moved to Virginia and became a resident in August and earned only nontaxed (scholarship) income. Do I need to file as a resident or a non resident of California (or file at all)? Do I need to file as a part time resident of Virginia?

What colleges/universities in California have really good architecture programs? I want to someday be an architect, but I have to decide which college/university to go to in California. Please help! :D I have heard good things about UC Berkeley, Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCIArch), and Cal Poly. However, I don't know which one has the best architecture program.

In California, do I need to send paper copies of 1099-Misc forms to the state? I've prepared the 1099-MISC forms for my independent contractors (this is my first year having them in my business). I know a copy goes to the IRS, but I can't find anything about sending the paper copies to the state (California). Any insight? I'm thinking maybe California gets their information directly from the IRS?
