How often do I need to get my smog certificate?

I live in California, and my annual car registration is coming up. I got a notice in the mail saying I need to get a smog certification again. I already did one last year. Do I need to get my car smog certified every single year? This is on a 98 Honda Civic.

1. In NYS it is EVERY year. Given California has the most strict rules of all 50 states, I can't image anything else but a year. Good Luck...
2. In CA its every two years. Go to dmv.org click on your state, type in smog certificate in their search box and it should answer this for you. EDIT: Seems DMV goofed: http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/smog-check.php#Required_Smog_Inspections Question them with the proof you had it completed last year.
