what are the exact steps done during a california smog check?

i googled "smog check steps" and other variations, but the results tell you about how to pass smog checks and where to find smog check stations etc, which is not what i'm looking for. for example, when i did the smog check, the technician ran the car with parking brake on and AC on. is this required? thank you.
