Has the title of Conservative been hijacked by politicians and others?

I say others because I do not know what to call them. Just about all Republican politicians call themselves Conservatives even the big spending entitlement creating George Bush. I have friends that are true Conservatives and we talk all the time (we argue all the time) and they never say the juvenile low brow stuff I hear others who say who claim to be a Conservative. They will also tell you in a heart beat that George Bush is not a conservative.

2. Because he isn't. He's not a fiscal conservative and he's the opposite of small government. Obama is just Bush on crack cocaine.
3. Sure has, Lee Atwater and others of his ilk made Liberal a dirty word in the 60's and 70's for political gain. Now Rush, Rove and their ilk have made conservative a word not to be trusted. Funny that it was the same type of folks both times.
4. you're Absolutely right ...many people identifying themselves as conservatives are no where near the Definition of a true conservative .... and i agree ...Bush , Cheney , Mccain are a bunch a phonies ... and they're giving us a bad name
5. Your right. George Bush is not a conservative he was an idiot. Ronald reagan and Barry Goldwater would absolutely cringe at him and his voting record. The Republicans are using the word conservative just to justify themselves within the true conservative sect within the Republican Party. Now I am a true conservative. A small goverment, tax cuts for everyone, IRS hating, gun toting conservative, and i can tell you in a flick of an eyelash that conservatism is dying, and i'm sad to see it.
