How much does it cost to go to California from New York?

I'm in Valley Stream, Long Island NY. I'm planning on taking a trip to California with my friends next summer, I'm going to work this summer and try to get as much money as I can. I want to have enough money for a plane ticket TO and from california. How much does it cost to GO to california from New York by plane? And how much does it cost to go to california and come back? Advice would be appreciated!
