Have evangelical conservatives ruined the concept of what it means to be conservative?
I'm a conservative in the fiscal sense. Small government, low taxes, government doing less and not more,.. etc. You can throw that evangelical conservative crap in the garbage. Who speaks for fiscal conservatives anymore? Not people like Bush. Bush has expanded government size, spent like a drunk sailor, and curtailed basic civil rights. That's not conservative.

- We have no leader
- Not at all. BTW you are not now, or ever been conservative. A real conservative would not use the line you did. You can throw that evangelical conservative crap in the garbage If your a real conservative, I'm Bill Gates, and I am not Bill Gates.
- Your opinion that "you can throw that evangelical conservative crap in the garbade" shows me truly, how much of a conservative you really are.
- yes, they have taken over the republican party in the same way the social liberals have taken over the democrats This pretty much leaves moderates out in the cold and our country in a mess since it is controlled by a bunch of extremists
- When the radical, religious right-wing Republicans began getting into the heads of fellow Republicans, they were called the "Moral Majority". Some conservatives. like you, have not allowed the brainwashing to influence your political views. The "radicals" are a good example why there must be a separation of church and state. Personally, I am a Liberal Democrat, but I understand your objection to the current concept of the Republican Party.
- I'm with you. You've got Ron Paul maybe... but he leans a little too Libertarian for my taste. I'm currently an independent because I would consider myself what they used to call a "blue dog." As far as I can tell they no longer exist either. If they do no one hears from them anymore. I'm all for fiscal responsibility, but I do support the creation of a floor through which no American is allowed to fall and I am adamant in my support of public funding for education at all levels as a means of facilitating social equality... without cutting checks to people who do not work. I do however also feel that as a society we have an obligation to care for those who cannot care for themselves and a responsibility to care for our elderly and for children if their families are unable or unwilling. The alternative is frightening to me... and "build more prisons" is a VERY expensive solution. So I would say I'm fiscally conservative... within reason... we've got to fund the basics. But I'm socially liberal and I have no time for people who think they "convert" me. Convert me to what??? Their own little version of mythology.... the evangelicals can no more convince me that they're correct in their beliefs than an ancient Greek trying to convince me I'll be struck down if I say something like, "Zeus is a fraud and a pussy". Whew... still here. No lightning bolts...
